Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on January 13, 2025. This visit would be Modi's 12th such trip to Jammu and Kashmir since he took office in 2014.

Ahead of his visit, security has been heightened across Srinagar and parts of Kashmir. This will also be PM Modi's first visit to J&K since the assembly elections.

Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah paid a visit to the Z-Morh tunnel to oversee the preparations for the inauguration ceremony.

"Security has been tightened near the Z-Morh tunnel. Multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place and the PM’s security team, comprising the SPG personnel, has taken over the venue," police officials told news agency PTI.

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in recent months, especially after the assembly elections. In June 2024, nine people were killed after a group of militants opened fire at a passenger bus in the Reasi district.

On the other hand, South Korea secured their first win of the tournament with a 3-2 victory over China. Goals from Hyeonhong, Junghoo, and Jihun (55') clinched the win for their side.

China got off to a positive start as they kept the ball under control, and made it difficult for the Koreans to break through.

In October 2024, seven people, including a local doctor, were killed in a terror attack near a tunnel construction site in the Gagangir area.

Z-Morh Inauguration, Public Rally & More | About Modi's Kashmir Visit

PM Modi will be visiting the union territory to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel on January 13, 2025.

The tunnel was built at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. This tunnel covers 6.5-km and will make the Ladakh region accessible by road throughout the year.

This tunnel will also serve as a key artery for strategic military access to Ladakh. The completion of this tunnel, which began in May 2015, is a crucial step in bolstering the Indian military's ability to move personnel, equipment and other supplies to Ladakh for better preparedness.

After the inauguration, Modi is expected to address a public rally in Sonamarg, Ganderbal. The prime minister is also expected to hold discussions with senior officials on the region’s development, security issues, and the government’s ongoing efforts to integrate Jammu and Kashmir with the nation, especially since the abrogation of Article 370.

This meeting is also expected to address the growing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood among regional parties. Both PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have publicly stated that statehood would be restored in Jammu and Kashmir after the assembly elections.
